Questions ABOUT RADON?

Frequently Asked Questions

Testing is the only way to find out your home’s radon levels. EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon.

If you find that you have high radon levels, there are ways to fix a radon problem. Even very high levels can be reduced to acceptable levels.

EPA recommends that you test your home before putting it on the market and, if necessary, lower your radon levels. Save the test results and all information you have about steps that were taken to fix any problems. This could be a positive selling point.

The amount of radon varies over time and from room to room in a home.
A range of practical and cost effective well proven solutions are used by Affordable Radon, LLC to help reduce radon levels in existing buildings and to prevent radon ingress into new and existing buildings.

High Radon Levels Can Be Reduced
EPA recommends that you take action to reduce your home’s indoor radon
levels if your radon test result is 4 pCi/L or higher. It is better to correct a radon problem before placing your home on the market because then you have more time to address a radon problem.

A variety of methods can be used to reduce radon in homes. Sealing cracks and other openings in the foundation is a basic part of most approaches to radon reduction. EPA does not recommend the use of sealing alone to limit radon entry. Sealing alone has not been shown to lower radon levels significantly or consistently. In most cases, a system with a vent pipe(s) and fan(s) is used to reduce radon. These “sub-slab depressurization” systems do not require major changes to your home. Similar systems can also be installed in homes with crawl spaces. These systems prevent radon gas from entering the home from below the concrete floor
and from outside the foundation.

Five year warranty on radon fans and lifetime warranty on workmanship.

A method known as sub-slab depressurization reduces Radon Gas pressure. By using this method, Radon gas pressure built up under the basement floor can be reduced. In the basement, PVC pipes are inserted and sealed into the floor, which are attached to an in-line fan that creates a vacuum inside the pipes, which then pulls the gas from the basement and introduces it into the home’s ventilation system.

A home’s roofline is usually ventilated with PVC piping. There must be ten (10) feet above ground level and twenty-four (24) inches above the highest open or closed window or door. Well water that contains radon can also pose a health risk. Your drinking water could contain elevated levels of Radon if it is near a Uranium source. Radon is derived from Uranium. If Radon is present in water that enters the home, it needs to be remedied as soon as possible. Water radon issues can be resolved safely using diffused bubble aeration units installed by Affordable Radon Systems.

From the existing well supply, water enters the aeration unit. Air is injected into the water during a series of stages that cause the Radon to separate (desorb). The water is repressurized and connected to the house using the already existing pipework. In conclusion, the radon has been removed from the drinking water and you can have peace of mind with your family’s health.

Radon Testing Services - Rhode Island

Colorless, odorless, and invisible to the human eye, radon is a gas that cannot be detected by the senses. Several soils and rocks, including granite, naturally contain it. In nature, radioactive materials such as uranium decay naturally to form this substance. As a gas, radon will move freely since it has no chemical reaction with most materials. In our atmosphere, all radon gas originates from the Earth.

The presence of radon in the environment poses a danger to humans. It is possible to develop lung cancer when radon concentrations are high. The certified testing provided by Affordable Radon Systems is competitively priced. Our team will assess your home for radon levels and take steps to mitigate them. Call Affordable Radon Systems for all your radon testing needs, 401-601-1800 (RI Real estate transactions require home inspector to test).
